Hurricane Gustav was expected to make its presence known Sunday with its outer bands lashing much of Florida with rain and some thunderstorms. As the day progresses, wind and surf was to gradually increase along the central and western Gulf of Mexico in advance of the storm.
Thunderstorms also were forecast for the Southwest and Great Basin. Flooding was possible in parts of the Southwest.
Clear skies were forecast for the Northeast and West Coast.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Saturday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Fossil Butte, Wyo., to a high of 116 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
