By WEATHER UNDERGROUND – 5 hours ago

Hurricane Gustav was projected to strengthen throughout the weekend as it remains on a crash course with the Gulf Coast. Landfall was expected on Monday night.

Meanwhile, scattered showers and some thunderstorms were forecast Saturday for the Southeast and Northeast as a frontal system moves through the eastern third of the country. A high pressure system behind this front was expected to provide dry conditions in the Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes region.

Showers and thunderstorms were forecast for parts of the Southwest.

A trough of low pressure was expected to move into the West Coast, ending the week's heat wave for some inland areas.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 107 degrees at Fresno, Calif.
