The low pressure system off the New England coast was forecast to slowly lift northeast on Friday, while rain and high-elevation snow were expected to persist across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Appalachians.

Moderate to heavy snow could fall in northern New England, possibly more than 6 inches. Cool and blustery conditions were expected through Saturday.

Out West, the storm system that moved ashore on Thursday was forecast to sag southward across California and eastward across the northern states. Widespread rain and mountain snow showers were forecast for California and portions of the Intermountain West.

Due to lack of moisture from the Pacific, precipitation was forecast to remain mainly on the light side. Winds were expected to pick up a bit Friday night and Saturday in the hills and mountains. The associated cold front was expected to move through and build a strong ridge of high pressure over the Four Corners.

Unseasonably warm and dry weather was expected in the Central U.S. and Northern Plains ahead of the approaching storm system. Much colder temperatures with precipitation were expected Friday night into Saturday.

On Thursday, temperatures in the Lower 48 states ranged from a low of 8 degrees at Kremmling, Colo. to a high of 89 degrees at Santa Ana, Calif.
