A low pressure system sweeping through the Rockies into Northern Plains was expected to bring heavy rains and some flooding on Saturday.
Strong thunderstorms and possible tornadoes were forecast from Kansas through Iowa, while additional scattered showers and a few thunderstorms were expected to remain along the West Coast and into the Great Basin.
Showers and thunderstorms were expected to decrease gradually along the eastern seaboard, although an area of precipitation was forecast to linger over Florida.
A cold front pushing into New England was expected to usher in cool afternoon and overnight temperatures, but not much rain.
Temperatures in the Northeast were to rise into the 70s, while the Southeast would see temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The Plains was to see 80s, 90s, and 100s, while temperatures in the 60s and 70s were expected in the Northwest.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 31 degrees at Island Pond, Vt., to a high of 108 degrees at Arizona City, Ariz.
