Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected Friday along a cold front stretching from the Mississippi Valley to the East Coast.
Thunderstorms were expected over New England along with severe weather over the mid-Atlantic states. Flooding was a threat from the slow-moving system.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms were to continue over eastern Texas, some of them severe.
To the north, pleasant weather in the mid-70s was forecast for the Northern Plains, while the Central and Southern Plains would reach 80s and 90s.
The West Coast was to continue seeing warm and dry conditions, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the 80s.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at Leadville, Colo., to a high of 100 degrees at Needles, Calif.
