Hurricane Ike was projected to move toward Houston on Saturday as a Category 2 hurricane with 110 mph maximum sustained winds. Heavy rainfall, intense winds, and severe thunderstorms with possible tornado development were expected. Up to 15 inches of rain was possible in some areas.

Meanwhile, a low pressure system was expected to bring showers and thunderstorms to the Upper Midwest. The system was to produce a cold front that would extend into the Southern Plains, triggering storms as it slowly moves eastward.

Heavy rain was forecast for the Central Plains and flooding was possible in some areas. Rain also was forecast for much of the Northeast.

Clear skies were forecast for the West Coast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 21 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 99 degrees at New Braunfels, Texas.
