Widespread showers and thunderstorms were expected Sunday from the peninsula of Florida through the Northeast.
Showers and thunderstorms were also possible in the Central Plains and along the eastern slope of the Rockies.
There was a slight chance of severe weather for a wide swath of the country, from the Northern Rockies, through the Central Plains, and then through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
In the West, cooler conditions were expected, although inland areas were to remain quite warm.
Temperatures were to be in the 70s in the Northeast; 80s and 90s in the Southeast; 90s and 100s in the Southern Plains; widespread 100s in the Southwest; and 60s, 70s and 80s in the Northwest.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Saturday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Stanley, Idaho to a high of 121 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
