Wintry weather in the Southeast was predicted to creep northeastward, dumping widespread rain and snow across the East. Light snow was forecast for the upper Midwest and the northern Rockies, while more mild weather was expected along the West Coast.
Showers were forecast to turn into snow as a cold front brings near freezing temperatures to the South. One to 3 inches of snow was forecast across the region. More severe weather, including damaging winds with gusts up to 70 mph and tornadoes, was expected.
Severe weather was also possible in the mid-Atlantic and the Ohio River Valley. Snow, rain and sleet were forecast across the region, while light snow was likely in western Tennessee.
Three to 4 inches of snow was forecast for New England. Some areas could see 1 to 2 inches of ice, leading forecasters to warn of potentially dangerous roads.
Light, scattered snow showers were expected in the upper Midwest, and light snow was likely in the northern Rockies. More warm, dry conditions were forecast for the West Coast.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Wednesday ranged from a low of minus 14 degrees at Orr, Minn., to a high of 86 degrees at Tampa Vandenberg, Fla.
