Showers and thunderstorms were expected to encompass much of New England on Sunday as a developing low pressure system moves through the Great Lakes and into the Northeast.

The storm's cold front was expected to stretch along the eastern seaboard and instigate showers north of North Carolina.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms also were forecast for an area extending from the Lower Mississippi Valley to the southern Plains. Flooding was possible in parts of Arkansas.

The West Coast was to remain mostly dry.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Saturday ranged from a low of 34 degrees at Chemult, Ore., to a high of 118 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
