Tropical Storm Edouard was churning through the northern Gulf of Mexico early Tuesday and was expected to veer north, likely making landfall at near-hurricane strength near Galveston, Texas. Southern Texas was forecast to get 3 to 5 inches of rain.

A low pressure system moving through the nation's midsection was forecast to bring showers and possible severe weather to the upper Midwest and the Great Lakes. Showers and thunderstorms were likely in northern Indiana, southern Michigan and northern Ohio, and temperatures were expected to rise into the upper 80s and lower 90s.

Light rain was forecast for most of the Northeast, where temperatures were expected to range from the 60s to the 80s. Skies were expected to clear over the Tennessee Valley and much of the Southeast, while Florida and cities along the Gulf Coast were likely to see rain.

Temperatures were likely to range from the upper 80s to the mid-90s in the Southwest. A heat advisory remained in effect for the central Plains and the lower Mississippi Valley, where temperatures were expected to reach into the 100s.

Light showers were forecast for the central Rockies, the Southwest and the central Great Basin, with heavy rain expected in southern Colorado. Temperatures along the West Coast and into parts of the Pacific Northwest were forecast to range from the upper 80s to the upper 90s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of 33 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 109 degrees at Alva, Okla.
